In may of this year, after 25 years from death of Bob Marley, “BOB MARLEY Icon 〜PHOTO EXHIBITION by DENNIS MORRIS” was held in 2nd floor of Tokyo Hipsters Club.
I had an interview with Dennis Morris, during his visit to Japan, about present and future activity and his stance to the work.


ボブ・マーリーの25回忌となる今年の5月、TOKYO HIPSTERS CLUB 2Fフリースペースにて開催され、盛況のうちに幕を閉じた写真展　『BOB MARLEY Icon 〜PHOTO EXHIBITION by DENNIS MORRIS』。
この写真展で公開された写真を撮影した現在来日中のデニス・モリスに、現在や今後の活動、そして仕事に対するスタンスなどについて訊いてみた。

DENNIS MORRIS
Jamaica-born Englishman.
He started his career at an early age. He was 11 years old when one of his photographs was printed on the front page of the Daily Mirror.
It was whilst bunking off school to wait for Bob Marley to arrive for soundcheck at the Speak Easy Club on Margaret Street, that Dennis's music photography career really began. From that time to the death of Bob Marly, Dennis continued taking official and personal photographs of him for 8 years
He has established the position as one of the most exciting and striking music photographers in the U.K. by the personal photographs of the Sex Pistols.
Dennis Morris continues to photograph the leading musicians of the time such as Bush, Oasis and The Prodigy.

ジャマイカ生まれの英国人。
11歳でデイリーミラー紙の表紙を飾る等、若くして写真家としての道を歩み始める。
14歳でボブ・マーリーと運命的な出会いを果たし、ボブが亡くなるまでの8年間、公私にわたりボブの写真を撮り続け、セックス・ピストルズのプライベート写真で国内で最も刺激的な音楽写真家としての地位を確立。その後もオアシス、プロディジー等のツアーに同行するなど、精力的な活動を続けている。

Now, what’s the reason that you decided to do Bob Marley exhibition at T.H.C.?
ボブ・マーリー写真展をT.H.C.で開催することに決めた理由を教えてください。

– Dennis Morris
Yeah, I thought it was a really good space. And I liked the spirit of the whole thing about T.H.C., and I thought it was ― it's suitable to display it, Bob Marley, at “a home of resistance”. And so, and that's what Bob Marley was about, resistance.
The exhibition was very successful, and I feel fortunate that I chose this place.

話をもらって実際に（会場を）見て、とても良い空間だと感じたんだ。
それと、T.H.C.の目指すスピリットが気に入ったこともある。T.H.C.の掲げる“反体制”的なスピリットはボブ・マーリーの生き方にも重なるから、彼の写真を展示するのにぴったりだと思ったんだ。
成功を収めることができて、この会場を選んで良かったと思っているよ。

Tell us about your recent work.
ありがとうございます。
では、あなたの最近の活動を教えてください。

– Dennis Morris
Okay. Very recently I was in China, working on a project with the Chinese government, in conjunction with the Olympics, and I was commissioned to go to China and basically to take pictures of my vision of China, about how I saw China. So I started off in Shanghai, spent 10 days there, then 10 days in Tibet, and then went down to Beijing. So all along the way I was taking pictures of things I saw, anything I wanted to. And then in 2008, there will be an exhibition in the Beijing National Museum.
It's quite a major show, major event. Obviously, because in 2008, the eyes of the world will be on China, you know. And I will be participating in it. So it's quite a big event, yeah.

オーケー。　つい最近は、（2008年北京）オリンピックに関連した中国政府の仕事で、中国に行っていたよ。　僕の目から見た中国を撮る、というのがミッションで、まずは上海に入って10日間、それからチベットに10日間、それから北京に行って・・・道中で見たもの、感じたもの全てを撮りまくってきた。　その成果は、2008年に北京のナショナル・ミュージアムで開かれる大きなイベントで披露する予定だよ。

O.K. How about in London?
ロンドンではどんな活動をされているのですか。

– Dennis Morris
In London, I'm working on the various projects of shooting and some exhibitions.
I’ve got an exhibition, which opens in October in Paris, in the Museum of Contemporary Music.
It will be an exhibition of the iconic images of rock and roll, and that shows one of mine.

いろいろな撮影や展示会の仕事をしているよ。
10月には、パリの現代音楽博物館で開催される、ロックンロール・アイコンの展示会に僕の作品が出るよ。

Next question, please explain your stance on taking picture and your stance as an artist?
写真家として、あなたが写真を撮るときのスタンスについて教えてください。

– Dennis Morris
Well, basically, what I try to do is, try and capture the true self of each artist I'm working with. It is the true self of every artist I work with. Because basically, musicians they project an image, which they want to be portrayed to the public, but there is also another side of it, which I'd like to get, which is the other side which they keep to themselves. And that’s why when you see the pictures of like say, Bob Marley, or the Sex Pistols, I’m able to create that. I’m able to capture that. I have a knack of doing it. It's like a gift. It’s may be, you know so the technical side of photography is important to me, but it is not the most important thing. The most important thing for me is to get that image, which makes you or any other viewer look at it and say, “The pictures show what I never knew he or she was like that.” That’s what's important to me.

So sometimes the way I work is quite random, you know, in terms of like, sometimes I don't set anything up, and sometimes I just take it as it comes, you know just move when I am shooting pictures. And sometimes I've got set pieces in my mind and then I go through that, but it's quite random. It's quite loose. It's very relative. I try to make the artists as relaxed as possible, and sometimes I work very quickly because I know artists get bored very quickly, because they have a short attention span. I try to make it as short and as comfortable as possible, so that they walk away feeling that, “Wow, that was great, wow.” They’re like, they know that’s over. You know, when I work with an artist, they really feel energy, you know I give out energy, and they give out energy, and then when the two meet, it's exciting, you get excitement. Then we both walk away, both parties, both walk away feeling like, “Wow, you know that was worth doing.”

いつも心がけているのは、どんなアーティストであっても、彼らの「素」をとらえることだね。
なぜなら、ミュージシャンは基本的に自分が撮られたいイメージを持っているものだけど、必ず別の面を持っている。それが僕が撮りたいものなんだけど、普段は表に出てこないんだ。
ボブ・マーリーやセックス・ピストルズのああいう写真を撮ることができたのは、その「別の面」を引き出すことができたからなんだ。　幸運にも僕はその才能に恵まれた。
写真は技術的な部分も大切かも知れないけど、僕にとって最も重要なことは、写真を見た人が「こんな彼（彼女）は知らなかった」って言ってくれるような写真を撮ることだね。
だから、僕の仕事のやり方は、時には何もイメージせず、なるがままに任せて写真を撮る。また、頭の中にイメージはあっても、基本的には成り行きに任せて撮ることにしている。
それは、「関係性」を重視するからなんだ。　僕はアーティストをできるだけリラックスさせるようにして、アーティストが飽きないうちに、時にはとても短時間で撮る。　彼らは集中力が長く続かないからね。僕がアーティストと仕事をする時は、できるだけ短く、そして心地よくなれるように心がけている。
彼らは僕からエネルギーを感じ、僕も彼らからエネルギーを感じる。その２つが重なったときに、エキサイティングなものができる。そして、撮影が終わって別れる時には、「この撮影はやる価値があったな」ってお互いに感じることができるんだ。

Your best icon is even now Bob Marley?
あなたのベスト・アイコンは今でもボブ・マーリーですか？

– Dennis Morris
Bob Marley was a very special person. As a word icon, what it means, he really is an icon.
You know, if you are into soul music, you know, next one you like is the Sex Pistols, but Bob Marley appeals to everybody, that’s what makes him so magical.
I mean you have things like Reggae, you know, that were successful, but again it's music of it's time, you know. It will never transcend 50 years from now. A thousand years from now, people will still be buying Bob Marley.

ボブ・マーリーは本当に特別な人だったね。　世界のアイコン、真のアイコンだ。
ある人はソウル・ミュージックが好きで、ある人はセックス・ピストルズが好きかもしれない。でもボブ・マーリーは全ての人に訴える力がある。それが彼をマジカルな存在にしていると思う。
「レゲエ」ということで考えると、ある時期に流行った音楽に過ぎないかもしれないけど、「ボブ・マーリー」は永遠に聴かれ続けると思うよ。

What kind of person is “hipster”, how do you think?
「ヒップスター」とは、どんな人のことを言うと思いますか？

– Dennis Morris
Well, a hipster is a person who is cool. Who is aware, who is alive, who is passionate, passionate about life, passionate about clothes, passionate about living. You know, a love person, a joyful person then I say hipster. For example, You, I’ve been told that. People say to me that, year, so I feel like a hipster. I enjoy it as a hipster. I enjoy life. I enjoy love. I enjoy the vibes, you know. Yeah, a positive vibration.

ヒップスターは「クールな奴」。　生活、着るもの、そして人生そのものに情熱を持っている人。　愛に溢れ、楽しい人。そういう人がヒップスターじゃないかな。僕もそう言われるけど、人生、愛を楽しんでいるよ。　そう、“positive vibration( 前向きな気持ち)”でね。

“positive vibration”ですか・・・

– Dennis Morris
Yeah, you need a positive vibration to get love and affection.

そう、愛情を得るためには“positive vibration”が必要なんだ。

What do you want to do from now on?
今後はどんなことをやりたいですか。

– Dennis Morris
What I want to do from now is just keep living.

ただ生活していきたいね。

Just keep living?
ただ生活していく？

– Dennis Morris
Yeah, because life is all about living, you know, it’s more than being alive. It’s about living.

うん、人生は全て「生活していく」ことだから。ただ「生きる」んじゃなくてね。

What kind of life do you want to live?
どんな人生を生きたいですか。

– Dennis Morris
More.

More。

More, what do you mean by more?
Moreとは具体的にどういう意味ですか。

– Dennis Morris
More of everything, more love, more wealth, more joy, more, you know, life is a – you can never get too much you see. But, no, you know, I am not talking about greed. Yes, I am talking about more vision, you understand, more joy, more love, not sex necessarily, but you understand, but you know, love. Love is more compassion, more. You know because we only live once, and there is so much more out there to experience which is, you know, what I mean. There is more places for me to visit. There is more exciting people for me to meet. There is more great pictures for me to take. You know, there is more experiences for me to feel, you understand, to more, more, more.
Does it make sense?

全てに対してより多く、ということさ。　より多くの愛、より多くの富、より多くの楽しみ・・・人生は多すぎるということはない。　強欲になれということではなく、より多くのヴィジョン、より多くの楽しみ、より多くの愛−必ずしもセックス的な意味ではなく、より深い相手への思いやり。　それが僕のいう“より多く”ということ。　
人生は一度しかない。　もっと経験すべきことはたくさんある。　訪れるべき場所はもっとあるし、会っておくべきエキサイティングな人ももっといる。　撮るべき素晴らしい写真ももっとあるしね。
僕にとって感じるべきことがもっともっとあるんだよ。言っている意味はわかるだろ？

Yeah. It’s connecting to “positive vibration” that you said.
Is there any plan as a photographer, as an artist “Dennis Morris”?
はい。　あなたがいう“positive vibration”に通じますよね。
では、写真家、アーティストである「デニス・モリス」として、何かプランはありますか。

– Dennis Morris
I just want to keep taking better, more pictures, more better pictures. We can never stop learning. You know each day is a new day. Everyday you wake up and you step outside; it’s a completely new experience. You never know what’s out there, you understand. You never know what’s going to happen. I mean, one day I met her, and I had no idea I would meet her and she will meet, I am here, you understand. Had I not met her that day, had I changed my routes, we’d never have met. You know that’s what life has in store for us. You know just a twist of fate and you never know. You never know what’s out there. It sounds nice to have to, you know, to be able to – be fortunate enough to meet good people like yourself, you know. To come to a city like Tokyo where once I didn’t know anyone and now you know people recognize me, people recognize my work, recognize my contribution to photography, you know, Life is like a jigsaw puzzle, and sometimes the jigsaw gets scattered and you got to put it all back together again. And then your slightly assemble again from starting, seeing a picture, and the picture is now starting to take shape, get very promising, really promising. Does it make sense? That’s what it’s all about. Life is just putting all the pieces together in a picture, you know.

もっともっと良い写真を撮り続けていきたいね。　人間はずっと学び続けていくものだ。　
毎朝起きて、外へ出ること自体が全く新しい経験なんだよ。何が起こるか全くわからないからね。
例えば、ある日ひとりの女性に会ったことは、全く予想していなかったことだった。もし歩く道が違っていたら、僕らは決して会うことはなかったんだよ。
人生は何が待っているかわからない、運命の巡りあわせなんだ。　僕は幸運にもいい人たちに出会えて、かつては誰も知り合いのいなかった東京のような都市に来て、今では人々は僕のこと、僕の作品をわかってくれている。
人生はジグソーパズルのようなもので、時にはバラバラになって振り出しに戻らなければならないこともある。　そしてまた最初から、すごく前向きな気持ちで、少しずつ組み立てていくものだ。
未来は開けているんだよ！
